Tonawanda, NY - Woman Killed After Rear-End Crash on Twin Cities Memorial Hwy

Tonawanda, NY (May 7, 2025) – A serious crash on Twin Cities Memorial Highway near Luskin Drive took the life of a 30-year-old woman on the evening of May 5. Emergency crews were called to the scene at approximately 5:15 p.m., following reports of a two-vehicle collision in the City of Tonawanda.

According to law enforcement officials, the woman was driving northbound on Twin Cities Memorial Highway when her vehicle was struck from behind by a large SUV. The SUV was being driven by a 55-year-old man, who also sustained injuries in the crash.

The woman was rushed to Degraff Memorial Hospital with critical injuries. She was later pronounced dead. The man involved was also transported for medical care, but his injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

Authorities closed portions of the highway while police investigated the scene and emergency personnel tended to the victims. The cause of the collision remains under investigation by the Tonawanda Police Department, which is working to determine whether speed, distraction, or other factors played a role in the fatal incident.

We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.

We offer our sympathies to the family of the woman who lost her life in this accident.

Car Accidents in New York

In New York, motor vehicle accidents are a persistent issue on state highways and city roads. The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles reports hundreds of fatal crashes each year, with thousands more resulting in injuries. Many of these incidents involve distracted or aggressive driving, putting everyday commuters at risk.

Understanding what victims and families might go through after such a tragedy is important. Below are some of the most common types of injuries seen in rear-end collisions like this one:

  • Whiplash and Neck Trauma: Rear-end crashes often lead to whiplash, which can cause chronic pain and reduced mobility. Even low-speed impacts may result in strained muscles or ligaments that need physical therapy or medical intervention.

  • Spinal Cord Injuries: The force of being hit from behind can jolt the spine, leading to herniated discs or worse. Spinal damage can cause pain, numbness, or long-term disability depending on the severity and location of the injury.

  • Head Injuries and Concussions: Sudden impacts can cause occupants to strike their heads against the steering wheel, window, or seat. This can result in concussions or traumatic brain injuries that affect memory, speech, and cognitive function.

  • Facial Injuries: Broken glass or airbag deployment can cause facial lacerations or fractures. These injuries often require cosmetic or reconstructive surgery and have both physical and emotional impacts.

  • Psychological Trauma: Beyond physical wounds, car crash victims frequently experience PTSD, anxiety, or depression. Therapy and mental health support can be essential parts of the recovery process.
