Niagara Falls, NY - Teen Injured in Scooter Crash on Walnut Ave

Niagara Falls, NY (April 21, 2025) – A teenage boy was hospitalized following a serious crash involving an electric scooter and a car late Friday morning in Niagara Falls.

The collision happened around 10:45 a.m. on April 18 along the 1900 block of Walnut Avenue. According to reports from the Niagara Falls Police Department, a 32-year-old man was behind the wheel of a 2009 Mercedes traveling westbound. As he attempted to make a right turn into the lot of the Coastal gas station, he struck an oncoming electric scooter heading eastbound.

The scooter was being operated by a 17-year-old male who was not wearing any protective gear at the time of the crash. Emergency crews quickly arrived and transported the teen to Erie County Medical Center for treatment of injuries to his head and leg. As of the latest update, he was still being evaluated and his current condition has not been confirmed. The driver of the Mercedes did not report any injuries and remained at the scene, cooperating fully with the ongoing police investigation.

We hope the young man injured in this accident recovers quickly.

Car Accidents in New York

Motor vehicle accidents are a significant concern across New York State. In 2023 alone, there were over 300,000 reported crashes on New York roadways, many resulting in serious injuries. These incidents often involve pedestrians, bicyclists, and scooter operators who are particularly vulnerable. The aftermath of a crash can be difficult for victims and their families, especially when long-term medical care is required.

Electric scooter crashes can lead to several common complications. Here’s what victims and their families should be aware of:

  • Lack of Protective Equipment: Many scooter riders, especially teens, often do not wear helmets or other safety gear. Without proper protection, even low-speed impacts can result in concussions, facial fractures, or more severe brain trauma. This risk increases significantly when riders share the road with larger vehicles.
  • Right-of-Way Confusion: Scooters are smaller and less visible than cars, which can lead to confusion over right-of-way, especially at intersections and parking lot entrances. Drivers may not always see oncoming scooters, and scooter riders may not anticipate sudden turns.
  • Urban Traffic Conditions: Congested city streets create risky environments for scooters. Quick lane changes, sudden stops, and blind turns increase the odds of a crash. Riders must remain alert, and drivers need to be especially cautious in areas with mixed traffic.
  • Injury Types from Scooter Accidents: Scooter riders often suffer from orthopedic injuries such as broken bones, road rash, and ligament damage. When riders are thrown from the scooter, spinal injuries or internal trauma can occur, often requiring long-term rehabilitation.
  • Delayed Symptoms and Medical Costs: Some injuries may not be obvious immediately after a crash. Head trauma and soft tissue injuries can take hours or days to surface. Victims often face rising medical costs if treatment is delayed.
